Daddy already had the truck running out in the drive
It's never been easier to wake an 8 year old up at 4:45
I put my camo on record fast, he put coffee on in the kitchen
Mama handed me a brown bag full of Jimmy Dean and biscuits
We walked out the door, felt the first cold snap of fall
We were 'bout two miles down 24 when grandpa called

Hide that truck in the tree line
Be in that blind by sunrise
Neighbor kid said he saw that big 9
Rubbing up against a pine Monday evening
Rut's on, son they'll be chasin'
Be ready but boy, be patient
Make sure y'all shut that gate when you're done
Have a good hunt, and call me if you get one

It's been about fifteen years since we got to go together
But daddy still calls every opening day to talk about the weather
