from my dreams, i am torn
awoken by the sound of screams
so i spring forth

smoke covered the ceiling
scorching my lungs
so i crawled along the floor

leaving behind all i own
only once realized i was safe
i also realized that i was alone

it was now too late
to go back in
i felt helpless as i watched my room burn
my companion did not make it outside the shelter
hiding under my bed
i know in his
final moments he was terrified
the moment that i realized i had failed him
will forever haunt me

i had lost everything
but those thing did
not matter to me
self preservation
became my priority

you never know how you’ll think
