The Pace

I woke up in the night and the sirens were screaming
I shouldn't be dreaming; the day is in sight
It's the pace of this world that is bursting around me
It's leaving me breathless to reach for the light

For the sun has been missing, the hours are dark
We're lost in the tempest and all out of spark
The storm rages on but we still find no port
Now daylight is fading and the nights are too short

Is it true what they say that the future is failing
The paths we are trailing will lead us to black?
I must work through the night that is falling around me
Must keep fires a'blazing and salvage this wreck
