Drawing a tattoo, hands like a bird
Came back to mine like you promised you would
Crawled through the window
Dirt in your teeth
You're lying down with me

I started talking and I found your keys
And we spent the day in my childhood sheets
Said nobody out there would listen to me
'Til I started listening:

Mom got a second job and Dad's still dead
I'm doing better, but I'm losing my hometown friends

And I kinda laugh 'cause I knew that it'd happen
But I can't help but wish that you didn't
When you caught me talking like I'm so much bigger
You said I'm in the shoes that I left you in

Right before college, your dad's out of town
You fit a lightbulb inside of your mouth
You were talking so big, then you were mumbling so proud
But the joke's that you can't get it out

White room, blue curtains, and two plastic bags
You were the hardest that I've ever laughed
I think we found it 'fore anyone did
Back when it was safe to be stupid

You call me to tell me you got a girl pregnant
You're keeping the baby, you're leaving Connecticut
I started giggling, you cried on the phone
Said you felt like before
So you learn to like the sound of a girl falling asleep
And you sign up for things that you swore you'd never need
