Why Did You Invite Me To Your Wedding
Kevin Atwater
2:45My boy, covered in red We were flushed in fluorescence, the backseat a bed When a knock on the window, a flash in our eyes And an officer happy to ruin our night I let out a laugh like a shriek or a cry And you hit me reflexively quick at the time I was stunned into silence, we got just a warning I'm hoping we make it a joke in the morning You drive to my house I want us to talk, but the quiet's too loud I try to get naked again in the back I want you to see and to want what I have When you look at me, is that all that I am? My boy, covered in red From the blood dancing harshly and quick to his head Through a body that's working three times as hard To pretend what he's screaming is straight from the heart Saying, "Do you think I want that right now? On the road, by your house? Are you kidding me now?" And you're laughing at me, and I don't find it funny But maybe I'll get it alone in the morning The bed in my house I try to get off, but can't picture you now The backs of my eyelids are lonely and black Now all that I see is all that I have When you think of me, is that all that I am? A boy covered in blue Putting walls up around him, a jailer confused Casting off all new strangers, alone at the table Saying, "No one can hurt me if nobody's able"
